Learning Objectives

After completing this 1-hour continuing education course, the health care professional will be able to:

  1. Describe health care professionals’ role in increasing access to emergency contraception
  2. List the public health benefits of this medication
  3. State the indications for use, dosing and treatment interval for emergency contraception
  4. Describe the pharmacology of progestin-only and combined hormonal emergency contraception
  5. List clinical issues in provision of emergency contraception to women
Target Audience

This continuing education activity is intended for pharmacy and health care professionals with a specific interest in emergency contraception training.

For pharmacists in California, this CE program meets California's training requirements to provide EC pharmacy services.

  • Nurses and Nurse Practitioners: CME credit can be applied toward the nursing continuing education requirements of most professional organizations and State Boards of Nursing.
  • Nurse Midwives: ACCME credit hours in Category 1 are accepted by the Continuing Competency Assessment Program of the American College of Nurse Midwives for programs relevant to nurse midwifery.
  • Physician Assistants: American Academy of Physician Assistants accepts Category 1 CME approval from organizations accredited by the ACCME to grant Category 1 hours toward the Physician’s Recognition Award. Nurse midwives and physician assistants attending this course may report up to 1 hour of credit for this activity.

To obtain continuing education credit for this program, participants must complete the program evaluation and earn a score of 70% or better on the CE exam. Participants will have two opportunities to successfully complete the CE exam.
